Who doesn’t love cake?
As the introduction wrote, “Whether it’s the kind you eat or the variety of colorful texture, we all exist.”
And yes we are. We hope you are. Did Someone Say Cake includes ten quilts that are colorful and versatile and range from easy to medium. Just decide where to start – which quilt? Which layer cake? Which one should you choose first?
Moda Bake Shop Did someone say cake? This book will hit stores on Tuesday, February 1st.
Today’s cake tasting menu shares the desserts of three chefs from Moda Bake Shop. We asked each designer to share a little about themselves, a little cake FAQ.
Let’s start with Amanda Wilbert, who you may know as Pixed Just Sew.
This is a spice cake. The quilt finishes at 80″ x 80″ and is made with an apple cider layer cake from BasicGrey, enough room for backing, binding, and backing.
What’s your all-time favorite moda layer cake? All of them! I have so many favorites to pick just one!
What is your favorite type of cake? Red velvet!
Do you have a recipe to share or link to? No, the only thing I like “baked” is the quilts!
How long have you been an MBS chef? Since 2018.
My favorite part of quilt making is… Unblock blocks, with fabric picking in second place!
My least favorite part of quilt making is… Making a quilt backing.
Amanda Wilbert wears a Just Sew down-style quilt, and her Sugar Twist quilt is featured in The Best of Moda Bake Shop. More with Amanda:
Nicolas Dodd of Cake Stand Quilts.
Nicola’s Blossom quilt is made with a single layer Spring Brook bun by Corey Yoder, and has backing, binding, and backing. Blossom ends at 50 x 50.”
What’s your all-time favorite moda layer cake? I’m tempted to say the next time I sew, but there is one that stands out. While I made a book quilt with Corey Yoder’s Spring Brook, one of Corey’s early collections, Sundrops, was the inspiration for my first sampler quilt, the Spellbound Sampler, which was a real turning point in my design work.
What is your favorite type of cake? Do you have a recipe to share or link to? My Auntie Pat’s Coffee and Walnut Cake is absolutely my favourite, but in case that fails, Nigella Lawson has a great topping for coffee and walnut cake recipe.
How long have you been an MBS chef? I just checked and posted my first project back in February, 2016, so this has been nearly six years!
My favorite part of quilt making is… Almost all of that – though watch my next answer!. I love every part of it – the initial sketch, some delicious fabric procrastination, holding a final block in my hand, then I untie another string and arrange (and rearrange) it at the top of the quilt. Everything is magical.
My least favorite part of quilt making is… Stew! Nobody likes soaking! (But if anyone does, can you send me their details?)
Using a panel by Bella Solids, Nicola’s quilt was published in Love Patchwork & Quilting. (Image via Love Patchwork & Quilting.). (The colors used are Flamingo, Betty’s Pink, Aflam, Summer Sky, Tranquil Aqua, Dusty Jade, Flax, and Off White.)

And Lisa Jo Giroudat of Neverland Stitches.
Cartwheels and Roundoffs are made using Flowers For Freya by Linzee Kull McCray, and finish at 63 x 81. Single layer cake and yardage for background, border, binding and backing.
What’s your all-time favorite moda layer cake? Christmas Bulge by Urban Chiks. I’m a sucker for an old-fashioned Christmas quilt and Santa!
What is your favorite type of cake? Graham Cracker Cake – It’s an old family recipe that has been passed down through the past five generations.
Do you have a recipe to share or link to? Well – my great aunt Isabel will haunt me, but it’s too sweet not to share – Graham cracker cake recipe.
How long have you been an MBS chef? Since summer 2018.
My favorite part of quilt making is… Deconstruct the blocks I designed and see the image in my mind come to life.
My least favorite part of quilt making is… Quilt wrestling, also known as binding.
This is the ultimate Lisa Jo quilt from last summer’s Moda Bake Shop Summer Garden Quilt.
Washi Tape – Lisa Jo quilt from Best of Moda Bake Shop, published July, 2020.

We’ll be back next Monday with more chefs, more quilts, and maybe more donuts.
So what’s your favorite cake layer?
Fabric type. The edible kind.
