Two Become One – Free T-shirt Dress Pattern

Need a comfortable dress every day? One that looks good no matter where you go, and one that can take on the look of spacers or be sewn into the same fabric all the time? Then the Two Become One dress is for you.

I have been fascinated by this style of clothing lately. I love the casual look, like the t-shirt and skirt, but without the fuss of having to make sure the two matching pieces are clean and ironed at the same time (I know lazy). Now I can just grab it from the hanger, put it over my head and dash out—anywhere. Of course, you can also make it in the same fabric so that it looks more like a plain dress if you like and I think it would look great too – I’d really like to see some examples you sew.

Free dress pattern. It can look like separates with different fabrics on the top and skirt, or like a traditional dress of the same fabric throughout. Integrated elastic strap.

Features:

  • Scoop neck T-shirt bodice and short sleeves, straight skirt, attached at the waist with a belted belt for fitness, comfort and style.
  • There are no zippers or closures, just pull on and go.
  • Mix and match colors and fabrics or create the same fabric on top and bottom.
  • A piece gathered at the waist for a slimming look. Contrast will look good here too if you make the top and bottom the same.
  • Measures from 31 to 48 inch bust.
  • Easy to install, just take the side seams to fit your shape.
  • Suitable for knitted fabrics only.
  • Written and complete instructions.

I love how this dress can be made to look like a belted shirt and skirt, or how you can make it look like a regular dress.

(Brief instructions and small images. More images and details are included in the template download and PDF instructions.)

  • With RST, match the shoulder and stitch seams.
  • Find the center of the sleeve, and match it with the shoulder line. Pin the sleeve in place to loosen around the curves. Stitch, tidy and press. I love how this dress can be made to look like a belted shirt and skirt, or how you can make it look like a regular dress.
  • RST, pin and sew the skirt from the front and back down the front and back at the waistline, easing where necessary to fit.
  • RST, match underarm seam, waist seam and bottom skirt on each side. Pin and then stitch from the edge of the sleeve all the way to the bottom of the skirt. Repeat for both sides.
  • Check fit. Install any mods, paste them and try again. Once you are happy with the fit, cut and press the seams.I love how this dress can be made to look like a belted shirt and skirt, or how you can make it look like a regular dress.
  • Finish the bottom edge of the sleeves with an inch stitch. Use a rubber stitch or finish with a double needle. You can read here about how to finish the edges on knitting and how to use a double needle.
  • Using RST, stitch across the short end to connect the neckline. Fold it in the middle with wrong sides together along the length, pressing.
  • Pin the binding around the neckline, RST, matching the quarter marking pins. Pin between them when needed.
  • Stitch tie the neckline in place, tightening the drawstring to fit the length of the neckline while sewing.

  • Cut the waist belt.
  • RST, join the band on the short side. Mark a line halfway along the piece, opposite the seam you just sewed. The seam and the line you just marked are the side seams.
  • Cut two pieces of narrow or clear elastic.
  • On the inside of the strip seam allowance, stretch the elastic as you sew, and sew the elastic in place using a wide zigzag stitch or a triple elastic stitch. Repeat on the other side, sewing the rubber band on the wrong side above the line you marked in the previous step.
  • Turn the top and bottom of the bracelet an inch and stitch all the way around.
  • Try on the dress and slide the waistband into place. Mark where you want it, pin the seams on the dress with seams on the tape and pin in place.
  • Stitch from the right side, along the side seams to hold the tape in place.
  • Try on the dress and check the length. Mark where you want the flange to fall and snap into place. End the bottom hem line.

I’d really like to see what you make with this idea and pattern – either a shirt and skirt as in the examples you gave, or a full dress, or a dress with a contrasting waistband. Get involved by taking a few screenshots, uploading them to the project page on Craftsy, and linking them to the pattern. Thanks.
